Why Manglish converters get the ends of words wrong
Malayalam has a set of letters used only at the end of a word — the chillu letters, ൻ ൺ ർ ൽ ൾ. They represent a bare consonant with no vowel after it, and Malayalam uses them constantly, because a great many words end that way.
A phonetic converter has no reason to know this. It hears a final n, writes the ordinary letter with a virama, and produces അവന് where Malayalam writes അവൻ. Both may render, but only one is right, and the difference is immediately visible to any reader.
On top of that Malayalam keeps three l-letters — ല ള ഴ — that most speakers no longer separate clearly in speech. The language's own name uses the retroflex one: മലയാളം. Which letter a word takes is a fact about the word, not about its sound.

Why does Malayalam have three letters for l?
