Why Roman Telugu loses the vowel lengths

Telugu has ten vowels arranged in five short and long pairs, and the difference is not decorative — it distinguishes different words. and are separate letters, as are and .

English has no equivalent contrast, so nobody marks it when typing. Everyone writes Telugu, and a converter has to decide whether that first vowel is short or long . It is short — తెలుగు — but nothing in the Roman spelling says so.

The other half is the conjuncts. Telugu stacks a second consonant underneath the first as an ottu, so pustakam is పుస్తకం with the ta tucked below. Write the letters out in a row instead and you get something no Telugu reader would accept.

Where the difference shows

You type Correct Common error Why
Telugu తెలుగు తేలుగు short ఎ, not long ఏ
meeru మీరు మిరు long ఈ
Andhra ఆంధ్ర అంధ్ర long ఆ at the start
pustakam పుస్తకం పుసతకం స్త stacked as an ottu
amma అమ్మ అమమ gemination is a stacked ottu
namaskaram నమస్కారం నమస్కరం long ా before the ending

Questions

What is English to Telugu transliteration?

Typing Telugu words in Roman letters and getting them back in Telugu script. It is not translation: 'pustakam' becomes పుస్తకం, not 'book'.

Why does the tool change my vowels?

Telugu has separate short and long vowels that change the meaning of a word, and Roman typing does not mark them. తెలుగు takes the short ఎ even though people write 'Te-'. The tool picks the vowel the actual word takes.

What is an ottu?

A second consonant written beneath the first instead of beside it. పుస్తకం and అమ్మ both use one. Writing the letters in a row instead is the most common conversion error.

Is it free?

Yes, and it needs no account. Pasting text is free and unlimited. Uploading whole books or PDFs is part of the paid packages.
