Why Tamil typing tools pick the wrong letter

Tamil is unusual among Indian scripts in having no separate letters for voiced consonants. One letter covers each pair: is both k and g, is both th and dh. Voicing depends on where the letter sits in the word, and a Tamil reader supplies it automatically. That part is easy, and every tool handles it.

The hard part is the opposite case: sounds that have merged in speech but kept separate letters. Tamil has three l's — ல ள ழ — three n's — ன ந ண — and two r's. Most speakers no longer distinguish them clearly when talking, but the spelling of each word is fixed.

The language's own name is the clearest example. Tamil ends in , the retroflex sound that no other major language has: தமிழ். Type it phonetically and you get தமில், which is wrong in a way every Tamil reader notices immediately.

Where the difference shows

You type Correct Common error Why
Tamil தமிழ் தமில் ends in ழ, not ல
vanakkam வணக்கம் வனக்கம் retroflex ண here
Chennai சென்னை செண்ணை alveolar ன, not ண
Gandhi காந்தி கான்தி dental ந before த
Jaya ஜெயா செயா Grantha ஜ for j
Krishna கிருஷ்ணா கிரிஷ்னா Grantha ஷ plus ண

Questions

What is English to Tamil transliteration?

Typing Tamil words in Roman letters and getting them back in Tamil script. It is not translation: 'vanakkam' becomes வணக்கம், not 'hello'. It changes how the word is written, not what it means.

Why does Tamil have three letters for l?

ல, ள and ழ were once three distinct sounds, and ழ in particular is a retroflex sound few other languages have. Modern speech has blurred them, but the spelling of each word was fixed long ago — which is why தமிழ் is written with ழ and nothing else will do.

Why does Tamil script not show g, b or d?

Tamil uses one letter for each pair, so க covers both k and g. Which sound applies depends on where it sits in the word, and readers supply it without thinking. It is a feature of the script, not a limitation of this tool.

Is it free?

Yes, and it needs no account. Pasting text is free and unlimited. Uploading whole books or PDFs is part of the paid packages.
